When someone nearby searches "salon near me" or "pharmacy in Whitefield", Google shows a map with a few businesses before any website. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and it costs nothing. This guide walks through setting one up and getting it verified, what decides whether yours appears, and the mistakes that get listings suspended.
Step 1: Check whether you are already listed
Search your business name on Google Maps. A customer, or Google itself, may already have created a listing. If you find it, use the option on the listing to claim it rather than creating a new one. Two listings for the same place split your reviews and can get both suspended.
Step 2: Create the profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you will keep, ideally one belonging to the business rather than to an employee. Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard, choose a category, and add your address, phone number and website. If customers do not come to you (a plumber or a home tutor, say), enter the areas you serve and hide your address.
Step 3: Get verified
Google decides which verification methods to offer you. Often it is a short, continuous video showing your signboard or the street outside, the inside of your shop or office, and something only the owner can show, such as unlocking the door or using the billing counter. Some businesses are offered phone, email or postcard verification instead. Review can take anything from a few minutes to several days.
Choose the right category
Your primary category is the strongest signal of which searches you appear in. Pick the most specific one that describes your main business ("Dental clinic" rather than "Doctor", "South Indian restaurant" rather than "Restaurant"), then add a few secondary categories for other things you really do.
What decides who shows up
Google says local results depend on three things. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known you are, from reviews, links and mentions across the web. You cannot change distance. You improve relevance by filling in every field: hours, services, products with prices and a description. You build prominence by earning reviews and being listed consistently elsewhere.
Reviews: ask every happy customer
Copy your review link from your profile and send it on WhatsApp after a good visit, or print it as a QR code at the counter. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, calmly and briefly. Never buy reviews, write them yourself or offer a discount in return. It is against Google's rules, and Google removes such reviews and can restrict your profile.
Keep your details identical everywhere
Use the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook and Instagram. When these disagree, Google is less sure they are the same business. Update your hours for festivals and holidays, and mark the business temporarily closed rather than leaving a profile that sends customers to a locked door.
Mistakes that get profiles suspended
Adding keywords to your name ("Sharma Dental Clinic – Best Dentist Whitefield"), using a virtual office or P.O. box as your address, creating one listing per service or per phone number, and showing a home address as if it were a shop. A suspended profile disappears from Maps, and getting it back can take weeks.
A website makes the profile stronger
Your profile's website link is where people go to check that you are real: your services, prices, photos and how to reach you. A page that names your area and services also helps Google match you to searches. Erpixo's Business plan, ₹4,999 setup plus ₹999 a month, includes a website of up to five pages and setting up your Google Business Profile.
Key Takeaways
Claim or create your profile, get it verified, choose a specific category and ask your next five happy customers for a review. Those four steps are most of the work. If you would rather have it done for you, send Erpixo a WhatsApp message with your business name.
